GATE Photo and Signature Size: Pixel and KB Requirements

Everything GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) asks for in the photograph and signature upload, and how to produce both files without installing anything.

Photograph240 × 320 px5–200 KBJPG / JPEG
Signature250 × 80 px5–200 KBJPG / JPEG

Exam boards revise these figures between cycles, sometimes without announcing it. Treat this page as a starting point and confirm against the notification PDF for your own application.

Preparing the photograph

  1. Stand about an arm’s length from a plain white wall, in daylight, with someone shooting at eye level. Avoid selfies — the short focal length distorts your face and some portals now detect it.
  2. Neutral expression, eyes open, mouth closed, no cap or sunglasses.
  3. Crop to 240 × 320 px with the photo tool, selecting GATE from the preset list.
  4. Confirm the file lands inside 5–200 KB. The tool does this automatically.

Preparing the signature

  1. Sign in black or dark blue ink on plain white unlined paper, filling a box roughly the shape of 250 × 80 px.
  2. Photograph it flat in good light, with the paper filling the frame.
  3. Crop tight to the ink and run it through the signature resize tool.
  4. Check it comes out within 5–200 KB.

Things that get GATE applications rejected

  • GATE states its requirements in pixels, not centimetres, which trips up applicants used to exam forms that quote cm. Use the pixel figures directly.
  • The KB range is generous compared with most exams, so prioritise getting the pixel dimensions exactly right.
  • GATE asks for the photograph to be taken against a light background with the face occupying most of the frame, and it is checked at verification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the GATE signature size?

GATE typically asks for a signature of 250 × 80 px at 5–200 KB, saved as JPG. Confirm against the current notification, because these figures change between cycles.

What is the GATE photo size?

The photograph is usually 240 × 320 px at 5–200 KB in JPG format. It should be recent, front-facing and taken against a plain light background.

How do I resize my GATE photo and signature?

Use the photo and signature tools on this site. Select GATE from the preset list and the crop and file size are applied together. Everything runs in your browser, so your ID photograph is never uploaded anywhere.

Can I upload a PNG instead of a JPG?

No. GATE requires JPG, like almost every application portal. Convert the file first — it takes a few seconds and usually reduces the size at the same time.
