If one number defines online application forms in India, it is 50KB. Recruitment boards settled on it because a 50KB JPEG at roughly 200x230 pixels is large enough for a verifier to recognise a face on screen, but small enough that a server can store lakhs of them cheaply.

Modern phones are what break this. A photo studio hands you a file over WhatsApp, WhatsApp re-compresses it to 30KB, and the portal rejects the download for being under the floor. Nothing is wrong with the picture — only the byte count. Increasing the JPG size to 50KB restores the file to an acceptable weight without asking you to visit the studio again.
